About the Location
Alport Castles is a remarkable landslip feature in the Peak District National Park, located in Derbyshire within the Upper Derwent Valley. Stretching for over half a mile, it is widely considered the largest landslide in the United Kingdom.
The name “castles” comes from the series of gritstone mounds left behind by the landslip, which rise sharply above the valley and resemble ruined fortresses when viewed from a distance. The largest of these formations, known as “The Tower,” stands prominently and gives the landscape its distinctive appearance.
Set within a remote and wild part of the Dark Peak, the area feels far removed from busier locations. The surrounding moorland, steep valley sides, and wide open views create a sense of scale and isolation that makes Alport Castles one of the most dramatic and atmospheric places in the region.
