Derwent Dam, Peak District – Fine Art Print

Capture the scale and history of the Peak District with this fine art print inspired by Derwent Dam, an iconic structure set within the Upper Derwent Valley.

This artwork focuses on the powerful presence of the dam and the surrounding landscape, where water, stone, and open moorland come together. Inspired by time spent exploring the area, it reflects the contrast between engineered form and natural scenery, as well as the changing light that moves across the reservoir and valley.

About the Location

Derwent Dam is located in the Upper Derwent Valley in the Peak District National Park and forms part of a series of reservoirs alongside Howden and Ladybower.

Built in the early 20th century, the dam was constructed to supply water to nearby cities including Sheffield, Derby, and Nottingham. Its distinctive twin-tower design and solid stone construction make it one of the most recognisable structures in the region.

The area is also historically significant as the training ground for the RAF’s 617 Squadron during the Second World War, where practice runs were carried out for the famous Dambusters mission.

Surrounded by woodland, moorland, and open water, the landscape offers a wide range of moods throughout the year, from calm reflections to dramatic overflow when water cascades down the face of the dam. This print is designed to capture that balance of scale, history, and atmosphere.
