About the Location
The Eagle Stone is a prominent freestanding gritstone rock located on Baslow Edge in the Peak District National Park, near Bakewell in Derbyshire. Rising to around six metres in height, it stands out clearly against the moorland skyline and can be seen from a distance.
 
The surrounding landscape is part of the Dark Peak, an area characterised by millstone grit, open moorland, and dramatic escarpments. From this elevated position, there are panoramic views across the Derwent Valley and surrounding countryside, making it a popular stop for walkers and photographers.
 
The Eagle Stone is also steeped in local folklore. Traditionally, young men from nearby villages were said to prove their strength and readiness for marriage by climbing to the top of the rock, a challenge made difficult by its overhanging sides.
 
Today, the stone remains a well-known landmark along walking routes that include Baslow Edge, Curbar Edge, and the wider gritstone escarpments of the Peak District.
