Nine Ladies Stone Circle, Stanton Moor – Peak District Fine Art Print

Capture one of the Peak District’s most atmospheric and historic locations with this fine art print inspired by the Nine Ladies Stone Circle on Stanton Moor.

This artwork focuses on the quiet presence of the stones within the surrounding moorland, where natural textures and open space create a sense of stillness and mystery. Inspired by time spent exploring the area, it reflects the balance between landscape, history, and atmosphere that defines this unique site.

About the Location

The Nine Ladies Stone Circle is a Bronze Age monument located on Stanton Moor in the Peak District National Park, near the village of Birchover in Derbyshire. Dating back over 4,000 years, it forms part of a wider prehistoric landscape that includes cairns, standing stones, and other ancient sites.

The circle measures just over 10 metres in diameter and is made up of millstone grit stones arranged in a ring. Although its name suggests nine stones, there are actually ten, with one having been buried for centuries before being rediscovered.

Nearby stands the “King Stone,” a separate standing stone located around 40 metres from the circle, often associated with the site’s folklore.

According to local legend, the stones represent nine women who were turned to stone as punishment for dancing on the Sabbath, with the King Stone said to be the fiddler who accompanied them.

Set within open moorland and surrounded by birch woodland, the site has a quiet and secluded atmosphere. The combination of natural landscape and ancient history gives it a distinctive sense of place that differs from more dramatic or elevated locations in the Peak District.

This print is designed to capture that atmosphere, focusing on texture, form, and the timeless presence of the stones within the landscape.
