About the Location
Sgwd yr Eira is a well-known waterfall located in “Waterfall Country” in the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog), near the village of Ystradfellte in South Wales.
Its name translates from Welsh as “waterfall of the snow,” referring to the white, mist-like appearance created by the falling water.
The waterfall is formed by the River Hepste as it plunges over a resistant band of sandstone, creating a broad curtain of water that drops around 15 metres.
What makes Sgwd yr Eira particularly unique is the footpath that runs behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to walk directly behind the falling water. This creates a rare perspective, where the landscape can be viewed from within the cascade itself.
The waterfall forms part of the famous Four Waterfalls Walk, a popular route that passes through wooded gorges and connects several waterfalls in the area.
