The Cheesewring, Bodmin Moor – Fine Art Print

Capture one of Cornwall’s most distinctive natural landmarks with this fine art print inspired by the Cheesewring, a remarkable granite formation rising above the wild landscape of Bodmin Moor.

This artwork focuses on the stacked slabs of rock that create the formation’s unique silhouette, standing prominently against the open moorland. Inspired by time spent exploring the Cornish uplands, it reflects the contrast between sculptural stone, wide skies, and the rugged, windswept environment.

About the Location

The Cheesewring is a striking granite tor located on Stowe’s Hill on the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, near the village of Minions. It is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the region due to its unusual stacked appearance.

The formation consists of large granite slabs balanced on top of one another, created naturally over thousands of years through weathering and erosion. Its name comes from its resemblance to a traditional “cheesewring,” a device once used to press cheese or cider.

Standing at around 9–10 metres high, the structure appears almost impossibly balanced, with larger slabs resting on narrower ones below. This distinctive shape has made it one of the most photographed and visited features on Bodmin Moor.

The surrounding landscape is characterised by open moorland, granite outcrops, and a sense of isolation typical of Bodmin Moor, an area known for its wild beauty and rich history.

The site is also closely linked to local folklore. One legend tells of a contest between a giant named Uther and Saint Tue, who competed by stacking stones, with the Cheesewring said to be the result of their challenge.

Nearby features include the Hurlers stone circles and remnants of historic quarrying, adding layers of archaeological and industrial history to the landscape.

Today, the Cheesewring remains a popular destination for walkers, offering expansive views across Cornwall and Devon, as well as a unique perspective on the geological character of the moor.

This print is designed to capture that sense of form and scale, focusing on the balance of the rocks, the openness of the landscape, and the distinctive silhouette of the formation.
