Wheel Stones Summer, Derwent Edge – Peak District Fine Art Print
Capture the open and vibrant beauty of the Peak District with this fine art print inspired by the Wheel Stones, set high along the ridge of Derwent Edge in summer.
This artwork focuses on the distinctive gritstone formation as it rises from the surrounding moorland, illuminated by brighter light and expansive skies. Inspired by time spent walking the ridge in warmer weather, it reflects the contrast between sculptural rock, open space, and the softer tones of the summer landscape.
About the Location
The Wheel Stones, also known as the “Coach and Horses,” are a distinctive group of gritstone rock formations located along Derwent Edge in the Peak District National Park.
Derwent Edge is a long escarpment formed from millstone grit, overlooking the Upper Derwent Valley and Ladybower Reservoir. Rising to around 538 metres at Back Tor, it forms part of the wider Dark Peak landscape.
The Wheel Stones are one of several named formations along the ridge, shaped over thousands of years by erosion from wind, rain, and frost. Their unusual appearance has led to descriptive names, with the formation often said to resemble a carriage and horses when viewed from certain angles.
The ridge itself is known for its sequence of sculptural rock features, including White Tor, the Salt Cellar, and Back Tor, creating a landscape often described as a natural “gallery” of gritstone formations.
In summer, the character of the landscape becomes more open and inviting. Heather-covered moorland, longer daylight hours, and clearer conditions bring out the textures and colours of both rock and vegetation. The elevated position of the ridge provides wide, uninterrupted views across the surrounding valleys and hills.
Derwent Edge is a popular destination for walkers, with well-defined paths running along the top of the escarpment. Despite its accessibility, the landscape retains a sense of openness and exposure, particularly along the ridge.
The combination of distinctive rock formations, expansive views, and seasonal light makes this one of the most visually striking areas in the Peak District.
This print is designed to capture that summer atmosphere, focusing on light, colour, and the relationship between the Wheel Stones and the surrounding landscape.
