About the Location
The Woolpacks are a large group of gritstone rock formations located high on the plateau of Kinder Scout, the highest area in the Peak District National Park. Rising to over 600 metres, Kinder Scout is a vast upland moorland known for its exposed terrain and remote character.
 
The Woolpacks sit on the southern edge of the plateau near Crowden Head and Crowden Tower, forming one of the most distinctive geological features in the area.
 
Unlike many other gritstone locations in the Peak District, the Woolpacks are notable for the sheer number of formations in one place. Hundreds of weathered boulders are scattered across the moorland, creating a dense and visually striking landscape.
 
These rocks have been shaped over thousands of years by erosion from wind, rain, and flowing water, forming unusual shapes that often resemble animals, faces, or abstract structures.
 
The surrounding landscape is characterised by deep peat, heather, and eroded channels known as groughs, giving the area a rugged and sometimes challenging terrain.
 
Despite its remote feel, the Woolpacks are often visited as part of longer walking routes across Kinder Scout, including paths from Edale via Jacob’s Ladder or Crowden Clough.
 
From this elevated position, there are wide views across the Vale of Edale and the surrounding hills, with the open plateau creating a strong sense of space and exposure.
 
The combination of sculptural rock, vast moorland, and high elevation makes the Woolpacks one of the most visually distinctive and atmospheric areas in the Peak District.
